Blog - "Generation Y" and Social Media
The generation (my generation) born between 1980 -1990, revolves around the internet and technology; we are "Generation Y".
Our encyclopedia has become Google, books are now websites, rotary phones are now smart phones, letters have become emails, post and tweets. We are the generation that wants everything instantly, we want information now.
There are some who are against this fast-moving new way of life, but if they look at data, the numbers may astound some by how technology and social media can benefit a person at work and in their daily lives. Mashable posted a great infographic that breaks down the numbers of the impact of social media. One fact that stood out to me in this infographic was the Old Spice’s video “Mano a Mano en el Banon," in just one week the video had over 22 million views! The numbers alone show the power social media and how a product can go viral.
I for one can say that digital media has made a huge impression on my life with instant connection to the world through Facebook and Twitter. The social platform that has had the most followers is Facebook with over 800 million users. This site has reshaped the way my generation communicates. I use it for communication with friends, to follow the top news stories around the world, to keep up with ecommerce deals, and to learn more about what businesses are doing within their company. Businesses are not only focusing their time on their own websites, but they are now incorporating social media when they are building their digital brand.
Tweets and post may sound like strange words, but it is just a word that simplifies the communication of an action in the social media. Some may feel what "Generation Y" is obsessed with is just a craze - I feel that this is something that will be around for a while as the world continues to become smaller, when everyone continues to connect.
